DREF Mission

Inspiring Young People to Live Productive Lives

Our mission is “to inspire young people to challenge harmful norms, acquire skills and live productive life”. DREF Uganda works with adolescents and youth, especially girls, to improve their access to education, SRHR, child protection, economic empowerment, advocacy, climate resilience and social behavior change.

  • Provide critical support to the most vulnerable households and young people.
  • Promote safe, gender-responsive and youth-friendly environments in schools, communities and health facilities.
  • Engage communities to eliminate harmful practices such as child marriage and violence against children.
How DREF Works

Community-Based, Youth-Led Models

DREF Uganda uses proven models that put young people at the center while actively involving parents, caregivers, teachers, health workers and local leaders in Kwania District and beyond.

  • SRHR Champion of Change Model: trains peer educators to share accurate SRHR information and link adolescents to services.
  • Peer Navigation Model: peers guide young people at health facilities to access adolescent-friendly, gender-responsive SRHR services.
  • Building Bridges Approach: supports parents to communicate openly with adolescents on sexuality, protection and life skills.
DREF Vision

A Community Where Young People Thrive

We envision a community where young people, especially girls, are free from harmful practices and empowered to live safe, healthy and dignified lives. Every child and youth is equipped with knowledge, skills and support to rise above adversity and actively shape their own future.

  • Harmful practices such as child marriage and violence are eliminated through collective action.
  • Safe spaces are created for learning, growth, leadership and participation of all young people.
  • Youth drive sustainable development, social transformation and resilience in their communities.
DREF Goals

Achieving Impact Through Clear Goals

DREF Uganda focuses on thematic areas that respond to the real needs of children and young people, especially girls, while strengthening systems around them.

  • Expand access to inclusive education, retention and successful transition for children aged 6–12 and youth.
  • Advance SRHR, gender equality and GBV prevention and response for adolescents and youth.
  • Strengthen youth economic empowerment, climate change adaptation, resilience, and community-based child protection mechanisms.
